The Talkhouse
Wheatley Road,
Stanton St John,

The Talkhouse is a 17th Century thatched inn situated in a rather remote spot on the B4027, close to Stanton St John in Oxfordshire. It is a pub we have visited on many occasions, and each time we were impressed by the quality of the cask ales (beer from the Hook Norton Brewery is frequently offered), the tasty meals and the friendly staff. Definitely worth a short journey out of Oxford if you fancy a change of scene.

The Sun Inn
High Street,
Hook Norton,
Oxfordshire,
OX15 5NH
Tel: 01608 737570
The Sun Inn enjoys a lovely location in the North Oxfordshire village of Hook Norton. The village is situated on the north eastern fringes of the Cotswolds, and its delightful shambling buildings include the charismatic little pub The Sun Inn. The Sun Inn is right next door to the famous Hook Norton Brewery, and as you would expect the Hook Norton Best Bitter and Old Hooky are of a very high standard. We were also impressed by the excellent food on offer - pub classics rub shoulders with some rather more extravagent fare - and we were also fortunate enough to stay the night in one of the charming rooms for the night; an ideal solution allowing you to enjoy more of the excellent ales without worrying about how to get home!

The Rose and Crown
14 North Parade Avenue,
Oxford,
Oxfordshire,
OX2 6LX
Tel: 01865 510551
We like the pubs in Oxford, and you can find e-travelguide's Oxford Pubs page here. The Rose and Crown just shades it as our favourite, although there are many others we would thoroughly recommend. The Rose and Crown is tucked away in the picturesque North Parade Avenue, just off the Banbury Road in North Oxford. Entering the pub is like entering another world - greeted by the cheerful landlord and served a pint of excellent ale (usually Hook Norton Best and Adnam's Broadside, although we have seen others) then take a seat in one of the cosy rooms and enjoy the atmosphere. The food on offer is also good; in addition to the hearty bar meals there are pistachio nuts by the pint glass and pickled eggs. The clientele is truly eclectic; University Professors and students rub shoulders with locals and the occasional tourist, although thanks to its secluded position off the beaten track, it is not as 'touristy' as some other pubs in town. Worth seeking out.
